Health Care and Big Government
In a Benedict Arnold moment house democrat Bart Stupak and his group of pro-life reps accepted an executive order from the President instead of an actual amendment to the health care bill. What does this mean for average people? In the health care bill that will be signed into law this week by the President, the government will require a one dollar donation to a fund that pays for abortion as a part of premiums. This means that millions of Americans will unwittingly donate money to support Abortions for others.
Why is the pro-life issue such a hot item? I am not going to debate pro-life, or pro-choice issues in this blog, there are many people around the world already doing that. What I will say is that the millions of Americans who are pro-life believe that abortion is murder. They believe that to abort a fetus of any age during any stage of pregnancy is to murder a baby. Now even if you disagree with this political view, surely you can see the ramifications of forcing these independent free citizens to become party to what they believe is murder. To make these people a party to murder by their own convictions is unthinkable, Un-American, and not the actions of a free nation that loves liberty.
For 36 years the balancing act between the two positions on Abortion has been Rowe v Wade, and the Hyde amendment. Rowe V Wade gives Americans the freedom to choose to practice abortion, and the Hyde Amendment protects Americans who disagree with this, but not allowing for any federal funding of abortion. While both sides have fought the other on the issue, for over three decades the law has been the same, and while some Americans believe abortion is murder they were protected by the Hyde Amendment to know their tax money would not be spent on abortion.
As of May of 2009, polling shows that 51% of Americans are pro-life and do not believe in abortion. This means more than half of the citizens of our great nation do not want to be a part of any system or process that makes them a party to abortion. The Government is going to force tax payers to support federally funded abortion for the first time in history, and make half the country a willing participant in what they believe is murder.
No matter where you stand on this issue, no matter how much you despise the opposition on this issue, how could any freedom loving American want to push this on another American. The federal government is making 51% of the population an accessory to murder by the peoples own conviction and beliefs. How could anyone think this is ok?
So what of the executive order? First I suggest you read the executive order for yourself. Then once you feel satisfied with your understanding of it I would pose two problems with it.
1. Presidents of the United States can not make their own laws. No matter what presidents may think, our current one included, Presidents are not allowed to make up their own laws, not are they allowed to change our current laws at their own discretion.
2. It will only take one lawsuit to reverse the effect of this and any other executive order which is in violation of the law.
Executive Orders go all the way back to Washington who used to give out decrees, which are pretty much the same thing. They are not unlike an executive memo delivered from a CEO to a department of his company. They are orders from the boss, to those working for him/her.
Executive Orders are NOT laws. In fact it is Unconstitutional for the president to give any order to any agency to violate a law passed by congress. He may give his own opinions and methods for how a law is used, so long as it is not in direct conflict with the law itself. Executive orders often carry the same weight as a law, except that they are very easy to get rid of, or change. For instance a single court case finding the order to be in direct violation of the law would overturn any power it once had. Another way an executive order might change is by that same president, or a new president simply undoing it.
It is very clear that the president executive order promising to keep the Hyde amendment in play is in direct violation of the law that was just passed. The protections against the federal spending on Abortion was not included in the bill passed last night, nor was it include in the other amendments sent back to the senate. Lets just be frank, Executive Orders can often be unconstitutional to begin with, they hold no standing value as a law, and give no real protection to tax paying pro-life people.
Beyond the issue of abortion the executive order itself is a ploy to grab more power by the executive branch of government. This is not the first time the Obama administration has circumvented the congress and enacted his own executive orders and in effect trying to change the country in a fundamental way. This is another step toward tyranny. To those who are skeptical let me remind you of executive order 9066 put forth by Obamas hero FRD. This executive order called for military persons to round up Americans of Japanese descent, and they were kept in camps during world war 2.
Big Brother has now reached out its overbearing arms in two very powerful ways. Lets discuss the third.
By 2014 nearly all Americans will be forced into paying for a health care plan or be forced to pay a fine. Companies with more than 50 employees will be forced to pay $2,000 per employee to help cover the cost of employee health care. This is the largest government intrusion into our lives in the last 50 years.
Mandating that all Americans MUST have health care, else pay a fine is unthinkable. Especially when you consider that the average family plan will cost in the range of $15,000 per year.
Beyond all of this is the redistribution of wealth to lower income people by the middle class. People who make less money, and the poor will have their health care covered by those who make more money. This is socialism, plain and simple. When you take from the rich and give to the poor, not of the free will of the people, but by force of law it is socialism in its simplest form. Nancy Pelosi said the magic words that should scare every freedom loving American to the bone in her speach last night “Health care is a right”.
Our rights are not handed down to us by governments, legislators, and courts. Our rights are created to be a part of us by our own nature. No one has a right to take property from one person and give it to another, because of a moral imperative, or what they see as “unfair” or “unjust”.
I can not say this strongly enough. We have taken the next step to becoming a socialist nation.
What are we going to do about it?
